Ukraine— Tattoo scenes & cities

In Ukraine, tattooing long lived in the shadow of the Soviet era, when it evoked prison. A Ukrainian journalist notes that people still sometimes joke about this link and that, in her family, her tattoos remain hard to accept, because she is a woman and because of that image.

A researcher at the Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design described in 2018 a new style of Ukrainian patriotic tattoo that appeared at the start of the 21st century. Since Russia's full-scale invasion it has become a nationwide trend: on 27 March 2022, in Lviv, a studio tattooed a vyshyvanka symbol, the embroidered shirt.
