In Mesoamerica, tattooing was a mark of prestige reserved for nobles, priests and outstanding warriors. In the 16th century, Friar Diego de Landa described tattoos among the Maya made with ink and cuts, and very painful. The colonial authorities later judged the practice incompatible with Christian life and banned it among baptised Indians.

Today, Mexican tattooists must obtain a health control card from Cofepris, showing knowledge of first aid and hygiene. They use disposable needles and keep a client register for two years. Under-18s can only be tattooed with a parent or guardian present, or with written authorisation.
