In the countries of the former Eastern bloc, tattooing was taboo. According to an article published by Masaryk University, it was mostly limited to tasteless motifs done during military service or in prison. After November 1989 came a tattoo revolution in the country: according to the same text, the first tattoo studio in Prague opened in 1992.

In the 1990s, fashion favoured Chinese characters, lower-back ornaments and barbed wire around the arm. In 2014, the Czech press spoke of "tattoo tourism" in Prague, with clients coming from Germany, neighbouring countries and Switzerland. Tattoos were getting bigger, and quotations in Latin or Czech, like children's names, were gaining ground.
