Colombia— Tattoo scenes & cities

Among the Wayuu, a people of La Guajira, the traditional tattoo, the asho'oju'shi, shows the symbol of a person's clan. It is made with a cactus spine and ash or charcoal. According to Wayuu filmmakers, it helps the dead recognise clear water and reach Jepirra, the path of the dead.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Wayuu children forcibly taken from their families received a first tattoo so that their mothers could find them later. According to these filmmakers, the tradition has faded in many communities. A first gathering of Wayuu tattooists took place in 2023, followed by an international gathering in Majali in March 2025, where tattooing non-Indigenous people was debated.
