In Canada, the Inuit have an old tradition called kakiniit, practised almost only by women on women. A thread of caribou sinew, soaked in lampblack and seal fat, was pulled under the skin with a needle. Facial tattoos, the tunniit, marked for example the entry into womanhood, and chest tattoos marked motherhood.

Missionaries pushed this practice back, judging it contrary to the Christian faith, and it went underground. It has been coming back in recent years: a documentary on the tunniit was released in 2010, and an Inuit tattoo revitalisation project was founded in Canada in 2017. Many Inuit women wear them out of pride in their culture.
