In November 2015, the Te Papa museum presented Indigenous Ink, a tattoo festival founded in Auckland in 2011 by Terry Koloamatangi Klavenes, which connects Maori and Pacific Islands tattooists with indigenous tattooists from other countries; according to Sean Mallon, the museum's curator of Pacific cultures, such events create space for maintaining and sharing knowledge. In March 2026, Idealog announced the Roots Auckland Tattoo Convention, on 14 and 15 March at The Cloud on Quay Street, organised by Ben and Madeline Kaye, who run a studio on Auckland's North Shore.
